A native South Korean, Kowoon, Piano Instructor at Language and Music House, has been pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the Conservatory of Music and Dance, University of Missouri-Kansas City since 2015, under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Weirich. She earned the Master of Music and Performer Diploma from Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, and the Bachelor of Music from Sookmyung Women’s University and graduated the Chungnam Art High School in South Korea. Her principal teachers include Dr. Karen Shaw, Dr. Hye Soo Jeon, Dr. Soon Mee Hong, and Jin Yi Yang.
Kowoon is currently working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at UMKC, where she teaches in group piano classes and applied piano lessons for music major and non-music major students. She previously served as an Associate Instructor at Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, where she taught in group piano classes and private lessons from undergraduate to graduate, from music majors to non-music majors, and from beginners to advanced students. Before studying in the United States, she taught as a private instructor at Joeun Music Institution in South Korea where she worked with children teaching private lessons and basic music theory. Through her teaching experiences, she has been learning not only how to teach music, but more importantly to communicate with students and parents, how to assist professors, and how to collaborate with colleagues. This summer, she served as a Teaching Assistant at Interlochen Arts Camp, where she coached the advanced juniors chamber groups and organized their public concerts, taught an intermediates piano skills class, and monitored students’ practice time.
As an enthusiastic performer, kowoon plays performances with different repertoires such as solo, chamber, and collaborative every year in the United States, South Korea, Czech, and Italy. Her debut was at age 16 as soloist with the Chungnam Symphony Orchestra, as the winner of the Chungnam Symphony Orchestra concerto competition. She worked with Seoul National University Orchestra, Romanian Banatul Timisoara Philharmonic Orchestra, Sookmyung Festival Orchestra, Janacek Concert Chamber Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Kansas City Ballet, and the UMKC chamber orchestra. She also enjoys exploring contemporary/new music. As a member of the Musica Nova, the performance group for the new music by the UMKC Conservatory, she has several performances at the Musica Nova concerts and the Composers’ Guild concerts. Among several commissions from living composers, she worked with Dr. Chen Yi, a world-wide famous composer, and was invited to perform at the 2017 national conference of the Society of Composers, Inc.
In both her academic and professional life, Kowoon is organized, responsible, active, enthusiastic, and positive. In 2016, she founded the student organization, the UMKC Pianists, which serves the community through performance. She has been working as the president for the Collegiate Chapter of the Music Teachers National Association in 2016. She presented at the Music Teachers National Association 2017 national conference in Baltimore, Maryland, on the topic on “Tools and Techniques to Improve Sight-Reading Skills.” In 2017-2018 year, she will serve as a president for the Collegiate Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, a co-ed international professional music fraternity.

Want to Grow Your Mind with Language and Music?
Welcome to Language and Music House

The best time to expose children to music and language is while they are young; as by high school many people have lost the ability to hear specific accents or tones. That is the mission of Language and Music House, to grow minds through language and music. This includes Dyslexic minds as well, which are powerful but need to be taught reading and languages in a different way.
